{"id":60766,"date":"2025-10-23T11:55:54","date_gmt":"2025-10-23T04:55:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/onbird.vn\/?p=60766"},"modified":"2025-10-23T11:55:54","modified_gmt":"2025-10-23T04:55:54","slug":"reef-regeneration-project-begins-at-coral-jungle-reef-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dtabeam.com\/reef-regeneration-project-begins-at-coral-jungle-reef-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Reef Regeneration Project Begins at Coral Jungle Reef"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the past two days, <\/span><b>October 22 &#8211; 23, 2025, OnBird Phu Quoc<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> officially began the <strong>Reef Regeneration Project at <a href=\"https:\/\/onbird.vn\/coral-jungle-reef-the-healthiest-coral-reef-in-phu-quoc-island-vietnam\/\">Coral Jungle Reef<\/a><\/strong>, marking an important step in the ongoing effort for <a href=\"https:\/\/onbird.vn\/regeneration\"><strong>coral reef restoration<\/strong><\/a> in Phu Quoc Island.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The initial restoration zone <\/span><b>spans approximately 500 square meters<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">distributed across various sections of the Coral Jungle Reef, and<\/span> defined by red marker lines underwater. Within this area, our team and marine biologists have installed coral bases and begun transplanting fragments nurtured in both the <\/span><b>Northern and Southern coral nurseries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 colonies that have been <\/span><b>grown and monitored for more than six months.<\/b><\/p>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1046\" data-end=\"1093\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Phase_1_Transplanting_Coral_Fragments\"><\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 100%;\">Phase 1: Transplanting Coral Fragments<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To date, <b>eight coral species<\/b> have been successfully prepared and transplanted \u2014 <b>two more than initially planned<\/b> \u2014 building a strong foundation for biodiversity recovery:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Acropora Pulchra (Staghorn coral)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 recognizable by its <\/span><b>branching structure<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>capable of growing up to 30 cm per year.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Acropora Rosaria (Cherry Blossom coral)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 noted for its <\/span><b>turquoise color<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and steady <\/span><b>growth of around 20 cm per year.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Acropora Cytherea (Table coral) &#8211; <\/b>This coral species forms <strong>large table-like plates at depths of 3\u201325 meters<\/strong>, developing <strong>thicker and more robust structures in high-energy reef environments.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-underline text-strikethrough-none\"><strong>Porites Cylindrina (Finger coral)<\/strong> &#8211; This <strong>resilient species survived the 2024 bleaching at Coral Jungle Reef<\/strong>, and OnBird later found a few small colonies\u2014slightly affected at the base\u2014which were carefully collected, fragmented, and transplanted onto new natural substrates for restoration.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Pocillopora Damicornis (Cauliflower coral)<\/strong> &#8211; Once <strong>wiped out entirely after the 2024 bleaching event<\/strong> at Coral Jungle Reef, this <strong>highly adaptable species<\/strong> has now become a strong candidate selected by OnBird for reef restoration efforts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition to the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">five primary species<\/span> listed above, three other coral species have also been successfully cultivated and are being prepared for the next transplantation phase, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Acropora Hyacinthus<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Acropora Millepora<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Acropora Gemmifera<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p data-start=\"52\" data-end=\"127\">The OnBird team and marine scientists apply <strong>two transplantation techniques:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-start=\"129\" data-end=\"264\"><strong data-start=\"129\" data-end=\"161\">Large-scale transplantation:<\/strong> Bigger coral pieces are attached to natural substrates using biodegradable, underwater-safe materials.<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"266\" data-end=\"409\"><strong data-start=\"266\" data-end=\"301\">Micro-fragment transplantation:<\/strong> Small coral fragments are transplanted onto natural substrates to enhance attachment and accelerate growth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Phase_2_Drupella_Cornus_Control\"><\/span><b>Phase 2: Drupella Cornus Control:<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After transplantation, young coral fragments \u2014 much like patients recovering from surgery \u2014 remain <strong>fragile and vulnerable<\/strong> to external threats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the main dangers comes from <\/span><b>Drupella cornus<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a coral-eating snail found across Indo-Pacific reefs. These snails <strong>feed on live coral tissue<\/strong>, leaving white scars that <strong>slow recovery and allow algae to take over.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To protect the new transplants, <strong>the OnBird team closely monitors the coral restoration sites<\/strong>, controlling the presence of Drupella to <strong>prevent outbreaks<\/strong> and<strong> ensure healthy coral growth<\/strong> in the early stages of regeneration.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<h3 data-start=\"1750\" data-end=\"1801\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_Collaborative_Effort_Beneath_the_Surface\"><\/span><strong><span style=\"font-size: 100%;\">A Collaborative Effort Beneath the Surface<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1802\" data-end=\"2097\">This project combines <strong data-start=\"1824\" data-end=\"1861\">OnBird\u2019s coral nursery experience<\/strong> with <strong data-start=\"1867\" data-end=\"1911\">field data from local marine specialists<\/strong>, aiming to establish a replicable model for sustainable reef recovery.
